Removal and replacement

Signage Removal and Replacement

When a business moves, rebrands or outgrows an old sign, the old one has to come down and the wall has to be left in good order. Metal Signage removes signs safely, makes good fixing holes and marks where practical, and installs the replacement.

It suits tenants, landlords and property managers handling rebrands, lease endings and refurbishments.

  • Safe removal at height
  • Wall made good where agreed
  • Replacement made and fitted
  • Disposal arranged

Where removal and replacement is needed

  • Rebrands where the name or logo has changed.
  • End of lease, when a landlord requires signs to be removed.
  • Faded, damaged or failing illuminated signs beyond sensible repair.
  • Building refurbishments that include a new facade.
  • Upgrades to modern LED. See LED signage retrofit services.
  • Shopfronts and offices changing hands. See shopfront signs and corporate wall logos.

Service options

  • Removal only: sign taken down, cables made safe and fixings removed.
  • Removal and making good: holes filled and the wall cleaned. Repainting can be arranged by the property owner or quoted separately.
  • Removal and replacement: a new sign made to a fresh design and fitted in the same position or a new one.
  • Face or panel replacement: only the face of an existing lightbox is changed, which can save cost.
  • Storage or disposal: old signs are disposed of or handed over to you on request.

Materials and what happens to the old sign

Old signs include acrylic, aluminium, stainless steel, steel, composite panel and vinyl, often with LED modules and cabling. Metal components can sometimes be recycled and some signs can be reused or re-skinned. We tell you what is practical. Where an existing frame or housing is sound, a new face can be fitted instead of building a new box. See LED lightbox signs and slimline lightboxes.

Old fixings sometimes leave marks, holes or a clean patch where the sign once hung. We point these out at the survey so they are planned for.

Electrical and lighting considerations

Lit signs must be isolated and disconnected before removal, and loose cables made safe by a suitably qualified person. If the replacement is illuminated, the existing supply, cable routes and drivers are inspected and reused only where suitable. Advanced lighting such as RGBW, pixel or DMX is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability. Old lighting components are disposed of responsibly.

How replacement compares with other options

  • Choose replacement when the sign is beyond repair, outdated or the wrong size.
  • Choose cleaning and maintenance or LED repairs when the sign is sound and needs a refresh.
  • Choose an LED retrofit to upgrade the lighting in an existing housing.
  • Choose a new design, with mockups, when the brand has changed.

Technical considerations

  • Wall condition: the surface behind a sign is often cleaner or different from the rest, so painting the wall may be needed for a neat finish.
  • Fixing reuse: existing holes can sometimes be reused for the new sign if the layout lines up.
  • Height and weight: safe removal needs suitable access and sometimes lifting equipment. See installation and rigging.
  • Landlord requirements: a lease may require restoration of the wall on exit.
  • Approvals: replacement signs may need landlord, body-corporate or municipal approval, checked in the survey and design stage.

What affects the price

  • Size, weight and height of the existing signs.
  • Access equipment and electrical isolation.
  • Level of making good required.
  • Cost of the replacement sign, which depends on type and size.
  • Disposal or handover of removed materials.
  • Number of sites and the schedule.

Planning and care

Check your lease for removal obligations and notice requirements. Photograph the existing sign and wall before work starts. Keep an eye out for hidden services, such as cables or pipes, near fixings. Ask us to survey early, so replacement signs are ready when old ones come down, which limits the time without a sign.

Frequently asked questions

Can you only remove a sign?

Yes. Removal-only jobs are possible, with cabling made safe.

Will the wall look the same afterwards?

Holes can be filled, but a clean patch often shows where the sign was. Repainting is the neatest fix.

Can you reuse my existing lightbox?

Often, when the housing is sound. We can fit a new face or LED set.

Do I need landlord approval for the new sign?

Usually, for leased property, and sometimes municipal approval too. We note this in the survey.

Can you keep the old sign?

If you want it, we can hand it over. Otherwise it is disposed of responsibly.
