Door and room signs
Office Door Signs and Room Identification
Door signs tell people who works where, which room is which and what a space is for. We make door and room identification signs in metal, acrylic and composite that look like one family, so a growing office never ends up with mismatched plates.
This service suits offices, practices, schools, clinics and any building with more than a handful of rooms. We cut, print, engrave and fit them by appointment across Gauteng.
- Consistent sign family
- Names, numbers and titles
- Slide-in inserts available
- Fitted to glass, wall or door

Where door signs work best
- Executive and manager offices with named plates.
- Departments and shared rooms identified by function, such as HR, finance or server room.
- Medical and professional suites where a sign must look calm and credible.
- Toilets, kitchens, storerooms and stairwells that need clear pictogram signs.
- Tenanted floors where each suite needs a number or tenant name.
For rooms where names change often, we recommend slide-in or changeable formats so you do not have to remake the whole plate when someone moves.
Design options
A sign system is decided once, then repeated. The main choices are:
- Fixed plates with the name or number engraved, printed or cut into the surface.
- Slide-in holders with a replaceable paper or printed insert behind a clear cover.
- Changeable name inserts in a frame so the title can be updated without replacing the sign.
- Mounting style: flush on the wall, stand-off on small spacers, or fixed directly to a glass panel using a back plate.
- Shape and size: a standard rectangle across the building, with taller or wider versions for suites or shared areas.
Most offices settle on two or three sizes: a small plate beside doors, a larger one for key rooms, and a pictogram size for amenities.
Materials and finishes
Brushed aluminium and stainless steel give a clean, hard-wearing look and take engraving or filled text well. Acrylic is available in clear, frosted or solid colours, and suits modern offices with glass walls. Composite and PVC boards are lighter and more economical for large quantities.
Text can be engraved, vinyl-cut, UV-printed or applied in raised letters. We match colours to your corporate palette where possible. Explore finishes under materials and finishes.
Lighting options
Door signs are almost always unlit. Corridors and rooms already carry their own lighting, and adding LEDs to every plate adds cost and wiring with little benefit. The exception is a feature entrance or a dim corridor, where a single backlit suite sign can help, and for that we would look at a slimline LED lightbox instead. Anything with electronics is subject to technical assessment.
How it compares with related options
- Choose meeting room signs when the room needs an in-use or booking indicator in addition to a name.
- Choose desk nameplates for open-plan areas where there is no door.
- Choose office wayfinding systems for corridor arrows, floor numbers and directional signs.
- Choose internal architectural sign systems when door signs are one part of a building-wide design with a single style guide.
- Choose accessible and tactile signs when raised text and Braille are needed.
Technical considerations
- Viewing distance: door signs are read from close up. Text that is easy to read at arm length and visible from a few metres is usually the target, and we confirm on site.
- Mounting height and position: signs are generally placed on the latch side of the door at a consistent height so people know where to look.
- Contrast: dark text on a light plate or the reverse is more readable than tone-on-tone.
- Surface: glass, painted block, drywall and timber doors each need a different fixing, such as double-sided tape, screws or adhesive.
- Approvals: in leased buildings, check whether the landlord has a standard for door signs. We can work to that specification.
What affects the price
- Number of signs and how many different sizes.
- Material and finish.
- Fixed versus changeable format.
- Text method: engraved, printed or raised.
- Design time for a new sign system.
- Fixing surfaces and installation access.
Repeat orders of the same design are simpler to produce, so a full-floor order is usually more economical per sign than ordering one at a time.
Care and maintenance
Wipe plates with a soft damp cloth. Avoid solvent cleaners on printed or vinyl text. Slide-in inserts should be replaced when they fade or curl. Keep a spare set of inserts for staff changes. If signs loosen or peel, contact us through maintenance for refixing.

Frequently asked questions
Can we order a few signs now and more later?
Yes. We keep the design on file so later orders match, though small differences in batches of material can occur, so it helps to order a few spares.
Can the signs be changed when staff move?
Slide-in and changeable-insert signs are designed for this. Fixed engraved plates would need replacing.
Do you do Braille on door signs?
Yes, raised text and Braille can be added. See our accessible and tactile signs page for details.
Can you fix signs to glass doors?
Yes, using a suitable adhesive or a back plate. We check the glass type during the survey.
Can you design the layout?
Yes. We can propose a sign system from your logo and colours, and show you mockups for approval.
