Shopfront glass graphics
Retail Window Graphics for Shopfronts and Display Glass
Retail window graphics turn your shopfront glass into a branded surface: cut vinyl lettering, full-colour printed panels, frosted bands and one-way vision film. They suit any store that wants to be noticed from the pavement or walkway without replacing its existing signage.
Metal Signage designs, prints and installs window graphics as part of a complete shopfront, so the glass works together with your fascia and any projecting signs.
- Branded glass, quickly installed
- One-way vision available
- Cut or printed vinyl
- Changeable for campaigns

Where retail window graphics work best
Glass is often the biggest surface on a shopfront, and it is at eye level. That makes it the natural place for information a fascia cannot carry.
- Fashion, cosmetics and gift stores that want a seasonal or brand-led look
- Cellphone, electronics and service shops that need opening hours, services and contact details on the door
- Pharmacies, clinics and salons that want privacy at counter height while keeping the upper glass clear
- Restaurants and takeaways that carry a menu highlights panel or delivery information
- Mall and street stores with large display windows and a landlord who limits fascia size
- Stores in the middle of a refit that need a branded temporary hoarding or opening-soon window
If the glass is a short-run sale message rather than a permanent brand statement, see promotional window decals, which are specified differently.
Design options
Window graphics fall into a few families, and most shopfronts combine two of them.
- Cut vinyl lettering and logos: single-colour or layered, applied to the inside or outside face of the glass. Crisp, simple and good for names, hours and door information.
- Digitally printed vinyl: full-colour photographs, patterns and gradients, usually laminated for surface protection.
- Frosted or etched-effect film: a soft, translucent band that gives privacy at sitting or standing height while keeping the brand visible.
- One-way vision film: a perforated print that shows the graphic outside and lets people inside see out. It is well suited to large panes where you want colour without losing daylight.
- Window-to-door continuity: a graphic that runs across glass panels and the entrance door, so the shopfront reads as one composition.
Inside or outside application is decided on site. Inside-applied graphics are protected from weather and cleaning cloths on the street side, while outside-applied graphics are the usual choice where the glass is tinted or has an internal coating.
Materials and finishes
Most window work uses self-adhesive vinyl in cast or calendered grades, chosen for the surface and how long you want the graphic in place. Printed work is normally finished with a clear laminate. Finishes include gloss, matt, frosted and metallic cut vinyl, and perforated film for one-way applications.
Glass type matters. Standard, toughened, laminated, tinted and coated glass all behave differently when vinyl is applied, so we check the glass during the survey and recommend film accordingly. See materials and finishes for how vinyl sits alongside metal and acrylic in a shopfront.
Lighting and visibility at night
Window graphics are not lit themselves. Their visibility after dark depends on the lighting around them: shop lighting behind the glass, a lit fascia above or street lighting from outside.
- Opaque and dense colours read well when the shop is lit behind them, because the colour holds against the light.
- One-way vision film is best seen from outside in daylight; at night, with the shop lit, the image becomes much fainter, so do not rely on it for night-time branding.
- Frosted film picks up light from inside and can glow softly, which suits a shop that trades into the evening.
- If you want glass graphics that stay visible at night, consider pairing them with an LED lightbox or lit lettering above the door.
How it compares with related options
Window graphics are the fastest way to change the look of a shop, but they are one layer of a shopfront rather than the whole.
- Choose window graphics over a shopfront sign when the fascia is already fine, or when the glass is the larger and more visible surface.
- Choose a promotional decal instead when the message will change within weeks and clean removal matters more than finish.
- Add a projecting sign when people approach along the pavement and cannot see flat glass until they are level with it.
- Use frosted film principles for fixed privacy needs inside the store, such as fitting rooms and back-of-house.
Technical considerations
Good window graphics are planned around the glass, not just the artwork.
- Viewing distance and size: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. Glass viewed by people walking past can be much smaller; glass read from across a parking area needs bigger lettering. We confirm on site.
- Contrast: light lettering disappears against bright interiors and dark lettering against dark interiors. We check what sits behind the glass, including shelving and stock.
- Mounting surface: clean, flat glass is required. Glazing bars, frames, door handles and mullions are measured so graphics align.
- Weather and heat: glass that sits in direct sun can get hot. We choose film and application side with that exposure in mind.
- Landlord and centre rules: some centres restrict how much of the glass can be covered, and some require approval of window graphics. These are checked during the survey and may need the landlord or body corporate.
What affects the price
- Total glass area and the number of panes
- Cut vinyl versus full-colour print, and the number of colours
- Laminate or special finishes such as frosted, metallic or one-way vision
- Complexity of the artwork, including layered lettering and fine detail
- Access: ground-floor glass is simpler than glass that needs a ladder or lift
- Removal of old graphics before the new ones go on
- Whether the job is a single store or a multi-store programme with repeat artwork
Care and maintenance
Clean window graphics with a soft cloth or squeegee and mild soapy water, working gently over edges and avoiding abrasive pads, ammonia-heavy cleaners and blades. Inside-applied graphics should be wiped from the glass side only. Check edges periodically for lifting, especially on glass that receives long hours of direct sun. When a campaign ends, vinyl can be removed and the glass cleaned; ask us about removal and replacement so adhesive residue is dealt with properly.

Frequently asked questions
Can customers still see out through window graphics?
With one-way vision film, yes: the image shows outside and people inside see through it. Solid vinyl blocks the view where it is applied, so we plan clear zones for sightlines and security.
Do you apply graphics inside or outside the glass?
Either. Inside application protects the graphic from weather and cleaning. Outside application suits tinted or coated glass. We decide during the survey.
Will window vinyl damage my glass?
Correctly specified vinyl is designed to be removed from standard glass. Coated, etched or damaged glass needs a check first, which is why we survey before recommending a film.
Do I need landlord approval?
Often, in managed centres and some leased premises. We check this during the survey and prepare the drawings you need to submit.
Can you update the graphics for each campaign?
Yes. Printed panels or cut vinyl can be replaced while the lettering and door details stay. See promotional window decals for short-run messages.
