Monument signs
Illuminated Monument Signs for Entrances
A monument sign is a low, solid, ground-mounted sign that welcomes people at an entrance. With integrated lighting it works at night as well as by day, giving a business park, estate, school, clinic or office development a clear, permanent address. This page covers illuminated monuments; non-lit versions are covered separately.
- Solid ground-mounted entrance
- Integrated LED lighting
- Fabricated and clad options
- Built for long-term presence

Where monument signs work best
Monuments are for properties that are entered from a road or driveway:
- Business parks and office developments with tenant name panels
- Residential complexes and estates at the entrance wall
- Schools, colleges, clinics and care facilities
- Churches, community halls and public buildings
- Showrooms, dealerships and light-industrial premises
- Boundary corners where a wall sign would not be visible
A monument is low, so it is read by drivers slowing to turn in. If you need visibility from a long distance or a fast road, a taller pylon may be needed, sometimes together with a monument at the gate.
Design options
Monuments can be designed as a simple slab or a more architectural feature:
- Fabricated metal monuments: a steel or aluminium body with cut-out or applied lettering
- Clad monuments: masonry, stone, composite or painted finishes on a structural core
- Tenant panel monuments: changeable panels for multi-tenant sites
- Letter-lit monuments: built-up halo-lit or face-lit letters set into the body
- Combined signs: a monument with an address number and directional panels
Height, width and shape are shaped by the site, sight lines and municipal rules. Foundations are specified after the ground and structure are assessed.
Materials and finishes
Metal monuments are normally aluminium or mild steel, powder-coated or painted, with stainless steel or Corten-style accents. Faces may be metal, composite panel or acrylic. Estates and developments often prefer natural-looking finishes that match boundary walls. For weathering finishes, see Corten steel signs; for unlit solid entrance signs, non-illuminated monument signs.
Lighting options
- Halo lighting from behind solid letters, giving a soft glow on the monument face
- Face-lit letters or acrylic panels for maximum legibility
- Internal lighting through cut-outs in a metal body
- External ground or wall-washer fittings aimed at the face of the monument, where internal lighting is not suitable
Because monuments sit in gardens and verges, glare and light spill into neighbouring properties and passing drivers needs care. Ground fittings should not be easy for vandals to reach. The power supply often comes from a garden or gate circuit and needs a protected route, which we note at survey.
Monuments compared with neighbouring options
Non-illuminated monuments are simpler and need no power, a good choice where the entrance is already lit or the budget is tight. An illuminated monument is better where the entrance is dark or the sign must work at night.
Illuminated pylons are taller and read from further away; a monument is low and more welcoming. Freestanding business signs cover the wider family. Estates and complexes may also want residential complex entrance signs, and business parks business park signage as a full system.
Technical considerations
- Viewing distance and size: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. Monuments are usually read from a slowing vehicle, so keep wording short.
- Contrast: letters should stand clear of the monument face and any planting behind.
- Mounting surface and foundation: a monument needs a proper foundation. The ground, drainage and any buried services are assessed before design.
- Electrical access: power needs a protected, buried supply with suitable isolation. A qualified electrician may be required.
- Light spill and glare: fittings should not shine into the road or into neighbouring windows.
- Weather exposure: splash, irrigation spray and dust need to be considered when positioning fittings.
- Access and approvals: structural, electrical and municipal approval matters, including sight lines at the entrance, are checked at survey and design stage and may need the landlord, body corporate or municipality. We do not promise compliance in advance.
What affects the price
- Height, width and overall mass
- Fabricated metal or clad masonry construction
- Foundation work and site conditions
- Number of tenant panels or letters
- Lighting method and number of fittings
- Trenching and cabling distance from the supply
- Finishes such as stone, Corten-style steel or special paint
- Access, crane or vehicle requirements
A quotation is written after the survey and a design brief.
Care and maintenance
Clean faces with mild soapy water and keep planting, irrigation spray and long grass away from the sign and its fittings. Check ground-level lights for dirt or damage, and make sure the power supply remains protected. Repaint or reseal metal where chips reveal bare metal. LED signage repairs and signage cleaning and maintenance are available.

Frequently asked questions
How tall should a monument sign be?
It depends on the site, the road and municipal rules. We check height limits and sight lines at survey and design stage.
Can a monument show several tenants?
Yes. Changeable tenant panels are a common option for business parks.
How is it powered?
Usually from a protected supply near the entrance. We check the nearest point and route at survey.
Do I need approval?
Often. The landlord, body corporate or municipality may have to approve the sign. We check requirements at survey and design stage.
Can the monument match our boundary wall?
Yes. Cladding, paint and stone-effect finishes can be matched to the wall or building.
