Weathering Steel Signs

Corten Steel Signs for Estates, Gardens and Entrances

Corten is a weathering steel that forms a stable rust-coloured surface, giving signs a rugged, earthy look that suits landscapes and bold architecture. It is popular for entrance signs, monuments and feature panels where a natural, weathered look is the whole point.

We cut, fabricate and install corten signs to your design, with fixings and ground works planned at the site survey.

  • Natural rust-toned finish
  • Strong for outdoor signs
  • Cut-out letters and logos
  • Suits estates and gardens

Where corten steel signs work best

  • Residential estates and complex entrances; see residential complex entrance signs
  • Golf, lifestyle and wildlife estates where signs should blend with the landscape
  • Garden centres, nurseries, wine farms and lodges
  • Parks, public spaces and education campuses
  • Business parks wanting a distinctive entrance feature
  • Street-number and house-name signs for modern homes

Corten shines outdoors in open settings. Indoors, or beside pale finishes that could stain, other metals may be a better option.

Design options

  • Cut-out signs: text and logos cut through the plate, so shadows and the view behind become part of the design; see laser-cut metal signs.
  • Raised letters: corten letters fixed to a corten panel or wall.
  • Box-section monuments: folded corten forming a low, solid entrance sign; related to non-illuminated monument signs.
  • Totem and pylon forms: slim vertical corten structures; see totem signs.
  • Combined build: corten with stone, timber, concrete or inset lighting.

Materials and finishes

Corten is a steel alloy designed to weather. The surface starts as ordinary steel and develops its rust-toned layer once exposed to cycles of wet and dry.

  • Naturally weathered: supplied raw and allowed to develop over time; the speed and tone vary with exposure.
  • Pre-weathered: surface treated so the orange-brown colour starts sooner.
  • Sealed: a clear coat that limits run-off staining, with the trade-off that the surface changes more slowly or differently.
  • Thickness: chosen to suit size, strength and the amount of cutting in the design.

Weathering is not instant or uniform, so expect the look to evolve. Edges and cut-outs are detailed to age well.

Lighting options

Corten is a solid plate and not a glowing material. Lighting is applied around it.

  • Ground-mounted uplights washing the sign face
  • Concealed LED strips behind cut-out letters so light shows through the openings
  • Low-level lights beside the sign for estate entrances

Because the surface is dark and textured, warm light usually looks best. Electrical supply, trenching and approvals are checked at survey, and any advanced lighting is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.

Corten compared with other options

  • Laser-cut signs describes the cutting process, which can be done in several metals; choose corten when you want the weathered look in particular.
  • Copper also changes with weather but is more refined and costly per kilogram; corten suits larger, rougher outdoor pieces.
  • Stainless steel and aluminium stay clean and constant; choose them for a crisp corporate look.
  • Monument signs in masonry or composite are better where heavy ground-works are planned anyway.

Technical considerations

  • Run-off staining: rust-coloured water can mark paving, plaster and stone. Placement, drainage and sealing are planned at design stage.
  • Foundation: freestanding corten signs need a footing sized to height and wind exposure, confirmed with the appropriate professional where required.
  • Contrast: cut-out text reads well when there is a plain, lighter or darker backdrop behind it.
  • Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance, adjusted for roadside speed.
  • Sharp edges: edges are finished to reduce injury risk in public areas.
  • Approvals: estate rules, body corporate, landlord and municipal approvals are checked during survey and design.

What affects the price

  • Plate thickness, size and weight
  • Amount of cutting and fine detail
  • Folded or box-section construction
  • Pre-weathering or sealing
  • Foundation and ground works
  • Lighting, cabling and installation access

Care and maintenance

Corten needs little cleaning. Brush off dirt and leaves, and clear debris from around the base so water does not sit on the steel. Avoid pressure-washing heavily and avoid coating it unless you want to change its look. Check lighting and fixings now and then. We offer repairs and checks via signage cleaning and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Does corten rust through?

Corten forms a stable outer layer, but it is still steel and must be detailed properly. Standing water and poor drainage shorten the life of any steel, so we design for drainage.

Will it stain my paving?

It can, especially at first. Sealing, placement and drainage reduce the risk, and we raise it at survey.

Can I get a specific colour?

Colour is natural and varies. Pre-weathering and sealing give some control, but it is not a paint-matched shade.

Can corten signs be lit?

Yes, with uplights or concealed LEDs behind cut-outs. Advanced lighting is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.

Do I need approval for an entrance sign?

Often. Estates, body corporates, landlords and the municipality may all have a say. We check what applies during survey and design.
