Forecourt pylons
Petrol Station Pylon Signs Built for the Forecourt
A forecourt pylon is the first thing a driver reads from the road, so it has to carry the brand, the services on offer and the fuel prices in one clear, well-lit structure. Metal Signage designs, manufactures and installs pylon signs for petrol stations and roadside service sites across Gauteng, from a single-column pylon to a multi-panel structure with a price display.
- Brand, services and prices
- Legible from the road
- Steel-framed and lit
- Installed by appointment

Where forecourt pylons work best
A pylon earns its place wherever a driver has seconds to decide. That includes stations on main roads and arterials, sites near highway off-ramps, and forecourts set back behind a verge or a parking apron. It also suits a site that shares a corner with other businesses, where a taller, clearer structure stops the station disappearing into the street scene.
- Stand-alone fuel stations that need a visible entrance marker
- Combined forecourt and convenience sites that advertise fuel, a shop and a car wash on one structure
- Independent operators refreshing an ageing or faded pylon
- Operators rebranding a site and replacing panels on an existing support
- Sites that need a pylon relocated or rebuilt because of road works or a layout change
If you are a dealer or franchise operator, your brand owner may supply approved artwork and sign standards. We work from those files and build to the specification you are given.
Pylon design options
Most forecourt pylons are a steel column or frame carrying one or more sign modules. The way those modules are arranged tells a driver what they are looking at before they can read a word.
- Top brand panel. A double-sided lit cabinet or lightbox that carries the logo and brand colours.
- Service panels. Smaller modules below the brand panel for shop, car wash, ATM, tyre and air or similar services.
- Price section. A manual or LED display for fuel grades and prices, covered on our petrol price display signs page.
- Single or double column. One column is simpler and lighter; a wider two-column frame gives more panel area and a stronger road presence.
- Foundation. A reinforced concrete base is designed for the structure height, panel area and the soil on site.
We draw the module layout to scale against your logo so that the brand panel, services and prices each get the space they need and nothing feels crammed.
Materials and finishes
The structure is normally fabricated steel, painted or powder-coated for outdoor use, with aluminium cladding or sheet where a clean face is needed. Sign faces are usually translucent acrylic or polycarbonate with applied vinyl or printed graphics, or flat aluminium panels where a face is not lit.
- Powder-coated or painted steel frames and columns
- Aluminium composite or sheet cladding for the structure
- Translucent acrylic or polycarbonate faces for lit modules
- Cut vinyl in translucent and opaque colours; digital print where artwork requires it
- Stainless steel fixings and sealed joints at weather-exposed points
Colour matching to your brand reference is done during design approval, and we advise on how translucent colours shift when the cabinet is lit at night.
Lighting for a forecourt pylon
Almost every forecourt pylon is internally illuminated, because it has to work at night and in poor weather. Modern builds use LED modules inside the cabinets with drivers sized to the panel area, which gives even light across the face without hot spots. Evenness matters more than raw brightness: a face that is glaring in one corner and dim in another reads badly from the road.
Brightness is also a neighbour question. A pylon that is too bright can spill into adjacent properties or dazzle drivers, so we set output with the site in mind. Colour-changing or animated lighting on a pylon is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability, and is not suited to every site.
Pylon signs compared with nearby options
A pylon is the tall, road-facing marker. It does a different job from the signs around it, and most petrol sites need several working together.
- Choose a pylon for road visibility; choose canopy branding to identify the forecourt once the driver has arrived.
- Choose forecourt directional and safety signs for entry, exit and pump-level instructions, which a pylon cannot do.
- Choose illuminated pylon signs for general retail and business pylons; this page is specific to fuel, services and price display.
- Choose a non-illuminated pylon only where the sign is not needed after dark.
Technical considerations
As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance, which is why a road-facing pylon carries much larger lettering than a shopfront. We confirm the right sizes on site, taking the road speed, approach angle and any obstructions into account.
- Height and sightlines. Trees, bridges, boundary walls and neighbouring structures can block a pylon; we check the approach from both directions.
- Wind loading. A tall, flat-faced structure catches wind, so the frame and foundation are designed with that in mind.
- Electrical supply. We check the existing supply, distance from the distribution board and whether a trench or conduit run is needed.
- Price display data. Where a display is controlled remotely, we confirm the signal and power needs at survey.
- Approvals. Structural, electrical and municipal outdoor-signage approval matters are checked during the survey and design stage and may need the landlord, the property owner or the municipality.
What affects the price
- Overall height, width and number of sign modules
- Single-sided versus double-sided faces
- Type of price section: manual numerals or LED display
- Foundation depth, soil and excavation requirements
- Distance to the power supply and the cabling required
- Whether an old pylon must be removed first
- Crane, rigging or traffic-management needs on installation day
- Branding complexity and the number of colours
Care and maintenance
A forecourt pylon lives in dust, fuel vapour, diesel soot and sun, so it needs regular attention. Wash the faces with a soft cloth and mild, non-abrasive cleaner, because harsh solvents can cloud acrylic. Check at intervals that every lit module is working and that panels and fixings are secure. If a section goes dark, the cause is often a failed driver or loose connection, which our LED signage repairs service handles. Ongoing support is described on our maintenance page.
Pylon signs across Gauteng
We arrange site surveys and installations by appointment from our Rivonia base. Pylons are common on arterial routes and commercial corridors throughout Gauteng, and these are the areas where we are most often asked about them.

Frequently asked questions
What goes on a petrol station pylon?
Typically the brand panel at the top, service panels such as shop or car wash below it, and a price section for the fuel grades. The layout is drawn to suit your site and any brand standard you work to.
Can you replace the panels on my existing pylon?
Often yes. We inspect the structure and fixings during the survey and, if the frame is sound, we can manufacture and fit new faces and lighting. If the frame is unsuitable we will say so and propose a rebuild.
Do pylons need municipal approval?
Outdoor signs usually fall under municipal signage rules, and a structural and electrical check applies as well. We look at these during the survey and design stage and tell you what may be needed from the landlord, owner or municipality. We do not promise approval.
Can the price display be changed remotely?
LED price displays can be built for easier updating, but controller options and availability are subject to technical assessment. We confirm what is possible for your site at survey.
Can you also do the canopy and the shop?
Yes. A pylon is usually one part of a forecourt package alongside canopy branding, directional signs and convenience store branding, and we can design them to work together.
