Hollow Letters, Real Depth
Fabricated 3D Metal Letters Built for Depth and Light
Fabricated letters are built like small metal boxes: a face, folded returns and a back, welded or joined into a hollow form. That construction gives you genuine depth, strong shadow lines and the option to light the letter from inside.
They suit buildings that need a bold name seen from the street, and brands that may want illumination now or later.
- Real depth and shadow
- Can be built to light
- Choice of return depths
- Strong from a distance

Where fabricated letters work best
- Corporate head offices and business parks with a strong street presence
- Retail centres and showrooms seen from roads and car parks
- Hotels, hospitals and campuses where a clear name sign is needed
- Large building signs and tall facades; see large building signs
- Petrol and industrial sites where signs must read at distance
- Reception walls and lobbies for 3D logos
If your sign needs to be noticed at distance, or may be lit at night, fabricated construction is usually the right starting point.
Design options
- Return depth: shallow returns for a neat profile, deeper returns for a bolder, shadowed look. Depth depends on letter height and any lighting inside.
- Face: solid metal faces for unlit or halo-lit signs, or translucent acrylic faces for glowing signs.
- Open or closed back: closed backs for unlit signs, open or vented backs where lighting and access are needed.
- Fixing: stud-mounted from the back, on a raceway, or on a backing rail for long runs.
- Colour: painted faces and returns in matching or contrasting colours; multi-colour logos can be built in parts.
Materials and finishes
- Aluminium: light and easy to paint; see aluminium letters.
- Stainless steel: brushed or polished finish for premium entrances; see stainless steel letters.
- Mild steel: for large letters where strength matters, protected by an appropriate coating.
- Faces: acrylic or similar translucent materials with vinyl, for illuminated versions.
- Coatings: polyurethane or powder-coat in brand colours, matched where possible.
Lighting options
This is where fabricated letters stand apart: the hollow interior holds the lighting.
- Front-lit: a translucent face glows forward; see front-lit channel letters.
- Halo-lit: a solid face with light from the back washing the wall; see halo-lit and backlit letters.
- Dual-lit: face and halo together; see dual-lit channel letters.
- Unlit: a simple, solid, weatherproof sign for daytime branding.
LED modules, drivers and wiring are planned for access and heat. Colour-changing and pixel lighting are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Fabricated letters compared with flat-cut
Choose fabricated letters when you need depth, a bolder look at distance, or a lit sign. Choose flat-cut letters when you want clean, solid shapes at a lower build complexity and no internal lighting.
- Compared with plain aluminium letters, fabricated builds are more complex but read stronger from the street.
- Compared with laser-cut panels, fabricated letters stand off the wall as individual forms rather than one pierced plate.
- Compared with a lightbox, letters let the building show behind them and feel more architectural.
Technical considerations
- Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. We confirm on site.
- Weight: larger fabricated letters carry more weight than flat-cut ones; the wall must be checked.
- Drainage: outdoor letters need drainage and ventilation so water and heat do not build up.
- Power and access: lit letters need a supply point and access for maintenance.
- Light spill and glare: halo and face brightness are balanced so the sign is comfortable to look at.
- Approvals: structural, electrical and municipal outdoor-signage approvals are checked at survey and design stage and may involve the landlord, body corporate or municipality.
What affects the price
- Letter height, depth and the number of letters
- Material: aluminium, stainless or steel
- Lit or unlit, and the type of lighting
- Number of paint colours and detailed logos
- Backing rail or raceway
- Access equipment, cabling and installation height
Care and maintenance
Clean faces and returns with water and mild detergent. Lit letters should be checked periodically for failed modules or drivers. Seals and drainage points need to stay clear. If a letter is damaged or a module fails, see LED signage repairs and cleaning and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between fabricated and flat-cut letters?
Fabricated letters are hollow with returns; flat-cut letters are solid and thinner. Fabricated suits lighting and a bolder profile.
Can I add lighting later?
Often yes if the letters are built with that in mind. Tell us at the start so access and depth are planned.
How deep should the returns be?
It depends on letter height and any lighting inside. We recommend a depth after the survey and show it in the visual.
Are fabricated letters heavy?
They are heavier than flat-cut ones. We choose materials and fixings to suit the wall.
Do I need approval?
Possibly. Landlords, body corporates and the municipality may need to approve. We check this during survey and design.
