Sign repairs

LED Signage Repairs and Fault-Finding

When a lit sign goes dark, flickers or lights unevenly, the cause is usually a failed module, a driver, a loose connection or water inside the cabinet. We diagnose the fault, repair what can be repaired and replace what cannot. This service suits shopfronts, pylons, lightboxes and channel letters that need to be working again.

LED Signage Repairs and Fault-Finding

Typical faults and where we help

Common problems on lit signs include:

  • Whole sign off or flickering, often a failed power supply, driver or timer
  • Dark patches or dead letters, often failed modules or a broken connection
  • Uneven or dim lighting, from water damage, ageing modules or dirty faces
  • Lights that stay on or will not switch on, a photocell or timer fault
  • Cracked, yellowed or loose faces
  • Water inside the cabinet from failed seals

If the sign uses fluorescent or neon, LED retrofit may be more cost-effective than repeated repairs. Electrical work on a sign may require a qualified electrician.

Repair options

After diagnosis, there are usually several routes:

  • Module or strip replacement: failed LED sections are replaced
  • Driver or power supply replacement: a failed supply is swapped for a suitable one
  • Wiring and connector repair: loose, corroded or damaged cabling is repaired
  • Control repair: a timer, photocell or controller is repaired or replaced
  • Face replacement: cracked or faded faces are replaced and re-vinyled
  • Seal and drainage repair: water paths are fixed to stop recurrence

We will tell you honestly when repair is worthwhile and when replacement of the sign or cabinet is the better path.

Materials and parts

Replacement parts are chosen to suit the sign. Matching the colour temperature of LED modules to the existing lighting avoids a repaired letter that glows a different shade from its neighbours. Availability of a specific module or driver model varies, and for older signs an exact match may not exist, in which case we propose a compatible alternative. Face replacements use opal acrylic or similar, with applied vinyl graphics. Cabinets that have corroded or warped may need metalwork repair or repainting. See materials and finishes.

Lighting diagnosis

Fault-finding is methodical: we check the supply, isolator and timer, then drivers, then each module run, then connectors and seals. A sign that fails only in wet weather usually points to water ingress; one that fails after a few minutes of operation may have an overheating driver. We record what we find so the repair is explained and future faults are easier to trace.

On signs with colour-changing or controller-based lighting, repair depends on the system. Replacement components and programming are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.

Repair compared with neighbouring options

LED signage retrofit replaces old technology such as fluorescent tubes and neon. Choose repair when the sign is already LED and a part has failed; choose retrofit when failures keep recurring on older lighting.

Signage cleaning and maintenance prevents faults through routine inspections. If the sign is beyond saving or the brand has changed, signage removal and replacement is the route. New lit signs are covered by custom LED illuminated signs and LED lightbox signs.

Technical considerations

  • Viewing distance and size: a partly failed sign reads poorly from a distance, so repair should restore even light. As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance for a sign to read well.
  • Contrast: faded or yellowed faces reduce contrast and may be worth replacing alongside the lighting.
  • Mounting surface: loose brackets or corroded fixings are checked while we are on site.
  • Electrical access: repairs begin with safe isolation. Electrical faults on the building supply side may need your landlord, building manager or an electrician.
  • Light spill and glare: replacement modules are set to match brightness and avoid glare.
  • Weather exposure: water, dust and heat cause most failures, so we inspect seals, drainage and ventilation.
  • Access and approvals: high signs need access equipment and safe working arrangements. Structural or electrical changes beyond like-for-like repair may need landlord, body corporate or municipal approval.

What affects the price

  • Nature and number of faults
  • Parts needed, including modules, drivers and controls
  • Availability of matching components
  • Face replacement or re-vinyling
  • Sign height and the access equipment required
  • Number of signs on the site
  • Whether the sign is accessible from the ground, a roof or a pylon
  • Callout location and timing

We quote after fault-finding. Where possible, we explain repair and replacement options side by side.

Care and prevention

Most repeat faults can be avoided with periodic cleaning, seal checks and early replacement of a failing module. Report flicker or dark patches as soon as you notice them. Switch the sign off at the isolator if you see water in the cabinet. Our maintenance service and signage cleaning and maintenance include inspections.

How ordering works

  1. 1

    Brief

Describe the fault, the sign type and when it started, and send photos.

  2. 2

    Site survey

We inspect the sign, isolate it safely and trace the cause.

  3. 3

    Design & approval

You receive the findings and options: repair, retrofit or replace.

  4. 4

    Manufacture

Parts are sourced and prepared, and faces or metalwork repaired if needed.

  5. 5

    Installation

The repair is fitted and tested, and we explain what failed and how to prevent it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is only part of my sign dark?

It is often a failed module, a loose connection or a damaged section of wiring. We trace the fault and repair that section.

Why does my sign flicker?

Flicker can come from a failing driver, a loose connection, water ingress or a timer fault. A proper inspection finds the cause.

Can you repair a sign you did not make?

Usually yes. We inspect it and tell you whether repair, retrofit or replacement makes sense.

What if the exact part is no longer available?

We propose a compatible alternative and match colour and brightness as closely as possible.

Is it safe to leave a faulty sign on?

Not if there is water in the cabinet, burning smells or exposed wiring. Switch it off at the isolator and call us.
