Fine Detail in Metal
Etched Metal Signs with Fine, Crisp Detail
Etching uses a controlled chemical process to eat a pattern or lettering into the surface of metal. The result is very fine detail, sharp edges and the option to fill the recess with colour.
It suits name plates, logos, ornate designs and small text that would be difficult to cut or engrave cleanly.
- Very fine detail
- Paint-filled recesses
- Logos and ornate artwork
- Brass, stainless, aluminium

Where etched signs work best
- Professional and corporate name plates
- Reception and foyer signs
- Directory and information plates
- Hospitality signage with ornate or script lettering
- Decorative panels and architectural details
- Limited-run branded plaques and presentation plates
Etched signs are often seen close up, where detail matters. For long viewing distances, large letters are more effective.
Design options
- Recessed etch: the design is etched down into the surface and filled with paint or left bare.
- Reverse etch: the background is removed leaving raised text or artwork.
- Photo-etch detail: fine lines and halftone effects, subject to suitability.
- Plate shapes and edges: square, rounded or custom outlines.
- Mounting: screws, adhesive, stand-offs or frames.
Materials and finishes
- Brass: classic and warm, widely used for etching.
- Stainless steel: clean, modern and hard-wearing.
- Aluminium: light, economical and available painted or anodised.
- Copper and bronze: special orders, subject to availability.
- Fill: black or coloured enamel or paint in the etched recess.
- Protective coat: clear lacquer can protect the surface in some cases.
Lighting options
Etched signs are not self-illuminated. They rely on good surrounding light.
- Spotlights or entrance lighting for outdoor plates
- Soft interior downlighting in foyers
- Matt or satin finishes where glare would hide detail
For a lit sign that carries detail, a laser-cut panel with a lit backing may suit better. Any lighting is assessed at survey.
Etching compared with similar methods
- Engraving cuts deeper, line by line, and is ideal for names and dates; etching reproduces much finer artwork.
- Laser cutting passes through the metal and suits larger shapes; etching works on the surface of a solid plate.
- Perforated panels create images with holes; etched plates keep the surface whole.
- Brass letters stand off the wall; an etched plate is a flat, detailed sign.
Technical considerations
- Line thickness: fine lines work but have limits; very thin strokes may need adjusting.
- Artwork: vector files give the sharpest result; see artwork guidelines.
- Reading distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance; etched plates are best for close reading.
- Glare: polished plates reflect; matt finishes read more easily.
- Outdoor exposure: sun and rain affect fill and lacquer over time.
- Approvals: landlord, body corporate or heritage approval may be needed, checked at survey and design.
What affects the price
- Plate size, thickness and metal
- Artwork complexity and detail
- Fill colours and finishing
- Single plate versus a run
- Mounting method
- Installation access
Care and maintenance
Wipe gently with a soft cloth and mild cleaner. Do not scrub the etched recess. Refresh fill or lacquer if it wears outdoors. See signage cleaning and maintenance for refreshing worn plates.

Frequently asked questions
How is etching different from engraving?
Etching uses chemicals to eat into the surface and reproduces finer detail. Engraving cuts mechanically and is better for deep text.
What artwork do you need?
Vector artwork is best. We can redraw a clear logo if needed.
Can the etched area be coloured?
Yes, with paint or enamel in the recess. Black is most common.
Is etched metal suitable outdoors?
Yes with suitable metal and fill, but sun and rain affect finish over time. We advise on exposure.
Can I order a single plate?
Yes. Single plates and runs are both possible.
