Government signage

Signage for Government Departments and Offices

Government buildings need signs that identify the department clearly, guide members of the public through often unfamiliar buildings, and look professional for years. Metal Signage designs, manufactures and installs external building signs, reception signs, office and floor directories and wayfinding for government departments and their offices.

  • Building and entrance signs
  • Reception and directories
  • Clear public wayfinding

Signage for Government Departments and Offices

Where department signage is used

  • National, provincial and local government offices
  • Departmental regional and satellite offices
  • Service centres where the public queue and are directed
  • Courts, licensing and records offices
  • Older buildings with outdated or mixed signage after a name or branding change
  • New or refurbished buildings ahead of occupation

Many departments work to written specifications or style manuals. We build to the specification and artwork you supply, and can help interpret it into manufacturing drawings.

Signage options

We can supply a complete package, or one element at a time as budgets allow.

Materials and finishes

  • Stainless steel and aluminium lettering for durable, formal external signs
  • Engraved metal or laser-cut plaques for emblems and dedication panels; see engraved metal plaques
  • Acrylic and aluminium composite for internal signs
  • Vinyl for lettering on glass and for lower-cost replacements
  • Anti-graffiti and easy-clean finishes for public areas

Public buildings take knocks and are cleaned often, so surfaces should be robust and fixings tamper-resistant where the area is accessible to everyone.

Lighting

Most department signage is unlit and depends on building and street lighting. Where an entrance sign must be seen after hours, we can propose halo-lit lettering or discreet spotlights, subject to power supply and the property owner's consent.

Lit internal directories, digital queue or message displays are options subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability. We keep any lit element simple and low-maintenance because government sites may not have in-house technicians for signage.

Technical considerations

  • Specifications and artwork. We work from your style manual, official emblems and approved colours; we do not alter them.
  • Accessibility. Contrast, height and tactile elements affect how well all members of the public can use the signs.
  • Viewing distance. As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance; we confirm on site.
  • Surfaces. Old facades may be cracked, painted or stone-clad, so fixings are checked at survey.
  • Ownership and consent. Buildings may be leased from private owners or managed by a public works entity; landlord or manager consent may be needed.
  • Approvals. Structural, electrical and municipal signage matters are checked at survey and design, and we never promise approval or compliance.

What affects the price

  • Number and size of signs
  • Material and finish
  • External versus internal signage
  • Lit versus unlit
  • Facade condition and fixing method
  • Quantity across multiple offices
  • Design and drawings against a specification
  • Installation access and scheduling around public opening hours

Care and maintenance

Wipe signs with water and a soft cloth. Avoid solvents on acrylic and aluminium composite. Check external fixings regularly, particularly on tall buildings. If a department changes name or branding, our removal and replacement service handles old signs and our cleaning and maintenance service covers upkeep.
