Reverse-lit lettering
Halo-Lit and Backlit Letters for a Premium Glow
Halo-lit letters have solid metal faces and LED lighting at the back. The light washes onto the wall behind and creates a soft halo around each letter, leaving the name itself as a clean, dark silhouette.
The look is restrained and architectural, so it is popular on offices, hotels, professional practices and any building where subtlety matters more than brightness.
- Soft halo glow
- Solid metal faces
- Refined, upmarket look
- Strong after dark

Where halo-lit letters work best
- Corporate and professional offices.
- Hotels, lodges and upmarket hospitality.
- Showrooms and boutiques with a premium positioning.
- Lobbies and reception walls.
- Buildings with a pale or textured wall that takes the glow well.
They are less suited to very dark walls, glass or heavily patterned surfaces, where the halo is lost or looks uneven.
Design options
- Standoff distance: the gap between letter and wall controls halo size and softness.
- Letter depth: deeper returns suit larger lettering and hide the lighting better.
- Face finish: brushed or polished stainless steel, painted aluminium or a textured finish.
- Halo colour: white for neutral glow or a single colour for accent.
- Combined looks: logo marks can be halo-lit while text stays unlit, or the reverse.
Materials and finishes
- Solid faces in stainless steel or aluminium.
- Returns in matching or contrasting metal.
- Paint finishes in brand colours; brushed and mirror finishes for polished metal.
- Acrylic or polycarbonate backs where the light source needs diffusion.
- Spacers and studs in stainless steel for durable fixing.
Metal finishes catch light differently at night versus day, so we show finished samples where possible.
Lighting options
LED modules are positioned behind the letter, facing the wall. The wall surface does much of the work: smooth, pale surfaces give a clear halo, while dark or very rough walls diffuse or absorb it.
White is standard. Colour-changing halo lighting (RGB or RGBW) is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Halo-lit vs front-lit vs dual-lit
- Choose halo-lit for elegance and an architectural feel, where a dark letter against a glow suits the building.
- Choose front-lit letters when maximum brightness and legibility from a distance matter more than subtlety.
- Choose dual-lit letters if you want both a glowing face and a halo behind.
- If your wall is dark, glass or very rough, front-lit letters or plain stainless steel letters may work better.
Technical considerations
- Wall surface: halo effect depends on the wall. Smooth and light-coloured surfaces give the clearest result.
- Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. Halo-lit signs are less bright than front-lit, so we confirm on site.
- Fixing: standoffs must carry the weight and allow cabling and drainage.
- Electrical access: drivers are housed where they can be serviced.
- Glare: halo lighting is gentle, which can suit residential edges.
- Approvals: structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked during survey and design, and may need the landlord, body corporate or municipality.
What affects the price
- Metal type and finish, especially polished or brushed stainless steel.
- Letter height, depth and count.
- Standoff and fixing complexity.
- Wall condition and cable routing.
- Access equipment.
- Design, mockup and approval work.
Care and maintenance
Metal faces are cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner suited to the finish. Check the wall behind for staining or damage, and have the lighting inspected if the halo appears patchy. Our cleaning and maintenance service can help.

Frequently asked questions
Does halo-lit light up in the daytime?
The halo is mainly visible at dusk and night. In daylight you see the metal letters, so the finish matters.
Is halo-lit as bright as front-lit?
No. It is subtler. For maximum visibility, see front-lit letters.
Will it work on a dark wall?
A dark wall absorbs light and reduces the halo. We check this at survey.
What is the difference between halo-lit and backlit?
The terms are used interchangeably for letters lit from behind onto the wall.
Can the logo glow while the text stays unlit?
Yes. Different elements can be lit differently, subject to the design.
