Light that works
Illuminated Signage Designed for Day and Night
Illuminated signs keep your business visible after dark, but they are not all alike. This hub explains how the main lit sign types differ, how to choose a lighting style, and what to plan for before a sign is made.

How lit signs differ
The difference is where the light comes from and where it lands.
- Front-lit letters glow through a translucent face, giving the strongest direct legibility.
- Halo-lit letters have solid faces and wash light onto the wall behind, for a restrained premium look.
- Dual-lit letters combine both for depth.
- Edge-lit acrylic lights the panel edges for a floating, clean effect.
- Lightboxes, including slimline and tension fabric types, light a whole graphic face.
Freestanding options include pylons, monuments and blade signs.
Choosing a lighting style
Pick by the job the sign has to do: maximum visibility from a distance, a refined glow on a feature wall, or a flexible graphic panel. Use the comparer below and see our full lighting technology guide.
Controls and scenes
Simple signs run on a timer or dusk-to-dawn sensor. Colour-changing and programmable options, such as RGB signs, RGBW architectural lighting, pixel LED signs and DMX control, can store scenes for different times or events. All advanced lighting is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Practical considerations
- Power: we check where supply can be taken from during the survey.
- Glare and spill: brightness is set to suit the surroundings, neighbours and viewing distance.
- Access: think about how technicians will reach the sign later.
- Approvals: lit outdoor signs often need landlord, body corporate or municipal consent, checked during survey and design.
- Existing signs: see LED retrofits and repairs.
Frequently asked questions
Which illuminated sign is easiest to read at night?
Front-lit letters usually give the most direct face visibility. Halo-lit letters read more softly, so contrast with the wall matters. See front-lit letters.
Can my old neon or fluorescent sign be converted?
Often it can be assessed for conversion. See LED retrofit services.
Do lit signs need approval?
Frequently. The landlord, body corporate or municipality may need to consent, and we check what applies at survey and design stage.
