Natural Copper Metal
Copper Letters and Signs That Develop Character
Copper is a metal with a story: bright and rosy when new, then slowly deepening to brown and, with time and weather, sometimes green. That change is exactly why designers and brand owners choose it.
We make copper letters, name signs and panels, finished bright or prepared to age naturally, and install them by appointment across Gauteng.
- Warm rosy colour
- Bright or patina finish
- Letters and panels
- Distinctive, natural look

Where copper works best
- Restaurants, wine bars and coffee roasters wanting a crafted, premium feel
- Boutique offices, studios and design-led reception areas
- Garden entrances, landscaped estates and lodges where natural tones blend in
- Water features and walls where a patina suits the setting
- Craft, artisan and food brands that value a handmade look
- Interior feature walls and counter fronts with copper logos
Copper suits sites where change over time is welcome. If your brand needs the colour to stay exactly the same for years, a coated or painted alternative may be a better fit.
Design options
- Flat-cut letters: cut from sheet and stud-mounted, simple and sharp.
- Fabricated letters: hollow forms with returns for more depth; see fabricated 3D metal letters.
- Copper panels and plaques: engraved or etched text on a copper plate.
- Copper-clad backing: thin copper over a light backing to cut weight on larger panels.
- Mixed materials: copper letters on timber, stone or dark steel for contrast.
Materials and finishes: bright, aged or sealed
Finish decides how the sign looks on day one and in five years.
- Bright polished: a shiny rose-gold look, which will darken in air unless sealed.
- Lacquered: a clear coating to hold the bright look for longer; the lacquer itself needs checking outdoors.
- Pre-aged: a chemically darkened finish to start with a mellow tone.
- Natural weathering: left alone to oxidise at its own pace, which varies with rain, sun and air.
Because copper can stain adjoining surfaces as it weathers, runoff onto pale stone or plaster is considered at design stage.
Lighting options
Copper is solid metal, so it is normally lit from outside rather than built into a glowing sign.
- Warm-white spotlights or wall-washers to bring out the colour
- Subtle LED strips behind letters for a gentle glow, built as a halo type (see halo-lit letters)
- Interior accent lighting on feature walls
Cool white light can flatten copper, so warm tones are usually preferred. Electrical access is checked at the survey.
Copper compared with alternatives
- Brass is more golden and more stable in colour. Choose copper when you want change and a redder, earthier tone.
- Corten steel also weathers, but to a rust-brown; it suits larger, bolder outdoor pieces.
- Stainless steel stays constant and cool; choose it for a modern, low-change finish.
- Painted aluminium can copy a copper colour at lower weight, though it will not age like the real metal.
Technical considerations
- Run-off: weathering copper can mark surfaces below it. We consider wall colour and drainage.
- Weight: solid copper is heavy; fixings and wall strength are checked at survey.
- Contrast: copper on a dark background reads strongly; on mid-brown walls it can disappear.
- Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance; we confirm on site.
- Different metals: contact between copper and other metals can cause corrosion, so fixings are chosen to suit.
- Approvals: structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked in survey and design and may involve landlord or body corporate approval.
What affects the price
- Copper thickness, weight and the size of each letter
- Flat-cut, fabricated or panel build
- Finish: bright, lacquered, pre-aged or left natural
- Engraving or etching detail
- Fixing, wall type and access
- Lighting and any backing panel
Care and maintenance
If you want a bright finish, wipe gently and ask us about re-lacquering when the coat wears. If you prefer a natural patina, keep cleaning light and avoid polish that resets the colour. Check fixings periodically. For repairs or refreshing, see signage cleaning and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
Will copper turn green?
Copper darkens and may eventually develop green tones, depending on air, rain and exposure. A lacquer slows this, and pre-aging sets a starting tone.
Can the colour stay bright?
It can be held longer with lacquer, but outdoor coatings need checking and renewing. Ask us about sealed options.
Will copper stain my wall?
As it weathers, run-off can mark pale surfaces. We consider wall colour and detailing to limit this.
Is copper heavy?
Solid copper is dense. For larger pieces we often use a lighter backing with copper facing.
Can copper be lit?
Copper is lit externally or by a halo build behind the letters. Advanced lighting is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
