Edge-lit panels
Edge-Lit Acrylic Signs With a Floating Glow
An edge-lit acrylic sign is a clear or frosted acrylic panel with LEDs set into its edges. The light travels through the panel and glows from engraved or etched artwork, so the graphic appears to float.
It is a neat, modern option for reception areas, boardrooms, directories and interior signage.
- Clean floating look
- Slim, modern profile
- Ideal for interiors
- Engraved or printed art

Where edge-lit acrylic works best
- Reception walls and lobbies.
- Boardroom and meeting-room signs.
- Directories and wayfinding in offices, clinics and hotels.
- Boutique retail and display windows.
- Covered entrances and protected outdoor spots.
It is mostly an interior product. It can be used outdoors only in sheltered positions, subject to a technical assessment at survey.
Design options
- Panel thickness and size: thicker panels carry light further; thin panels suit small signs.
- Graphic method: laser or CNC engraving, or printed and etched surface artwork, which is what picks up the light.
- Panel finish: clear, frosted or tinted acrylic.
- Mounting: standoffs for a floating look, wall channels, or a concealed frame.
- Lit edges: one, two or four edges can be lit depending on size.
Materials and finishes
- Cast or extruded acrylic in clear, frosted or tinted finishes.
- Aluminium or stainless steel frames, rails and standoffs.
- Printed or vinyl-backed layers for colour logos.
- Optional metal backers to contrast with the acrylic.
Clear acrylic is a delicate surface and can show scratches. Handling and cleaning guidance is part of the handover.
Lighting options
LED strip is mounted along one or more edges inside a hidden channel. The artwork scatters the light, so it glows while the panel itself stays mostly clear. Neutral or warm white are common; brightness is set at the driver. Colour-changing edges are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Edge-lit signs are gentle sources. They are meant to be seen at close range, not read from across a car park.
Edge-lit vs lightbox vs halo-lit
- Choose edge-lit for interiors and close-range signs with a premium, minimal look.
- Choose a slimline LED lightbox when you need a bright, evenly lit changeable graphic.
- Choose halo-lit letters for exterior lettering with a soft glow.
- For exterior brand names seen from a distance, front-lit letters are the better tool.
Technical considerations
- Viewing distance: best at close to medium range; as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance, so keep text size generous.
- Contrast and background: light spill is visible against a dark or plain wall, but washed out on a bright one.
- Mounting surface: standoffs need a solid substrate; glass partitions may need clamps.
- Electrical access: low-voltage drivers need a hidden, ventilated location.
- Moisture and heat: keep away from steam, condensation and direct sun.
- Approvals: interior work may need landlord or body-corporate consent, and any outdoor use needs checking at survey.
What affects the price
- Panel size and thickness.
- Engraving or artwork complexity.
- Frame and standoff materials.
- Number of lit edges and driver setup.
- Fixing method and wall type.
- Quantity, if you need a family of signs.
- Installation and cabling.
Care and maintenance
Dust gently and clean with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. Avoid solvents and abrasive cloths, which can cloud the surface. Check fixings occasionally. Our cleaning and maintenance service can look after larger installations.

Frequently asked questions
Can edge-lit acrylic be used outside?
Only in sheltered spots and subject to assessment. For exposed signs, look at front-lit letters or lightboxes.
Is the whole panel lit?
No. Edges send light into the panel, and only the engraved or etched artwork glows.
Can it show a colour logo?
Yes, using printed or backed layers, though the glow is strongest on engraved areas.
Can I change the graphic later?
Not usually. For updatable content, see slimline lightboxes.
Is it dimmable?
Yes, with a compatible driver.
