Bespoke LED signage
Custom LED Illuminated Signs Built Around Your Brand
A custom LED illuminated sign is designed from scratch around your logo, your building and the way people approach it, rather than picked from a catalogue. Metal Signage designs, manufactures and installs these signs for businesses, offices, retail sites and industrial premises.
If you are not yet sure which lit format suits you, this is the page to start on: we help you choose between letters, boxes, edge-lit panels and neon-style tube.

Where custom LED signs work best
Custom lit signs earn their cost where the sign has to work after dark or in poor light: shopfronts, office towers, business parks, showrooms, clinics, gyms, restaurants, warehouses with customer entrances and estate entrances.
- Street-facing premises where passing traffic and pedestrians are your audience.
- Buildings with a recessed or shaded entrance that need a sign to pull the eye in.
- Brands with distinctive logos whose shapes and colours do not translate well to a standard lightbox.
- Sites that trade at night, such as restaurants, pharmacies and entertainment venues.
Design options
The word custom matters here. We start from the logo and the wall, then choose the construction that does the job.
- Channel letters with lit faces, rear halos or both.
- Lightboxes with a printed or cut-vinyl face, single or double sided.
- Edge-lit acrylic panels for interiors and clean, modern reception walls.
- Neon-style flex for script, feature walls and hospitality.
- Mixed-technique signs, for example a metal logo mark over a lit text line.
Depth, return colour, mounting method (stud, rail, raceway or backing panel) and cable routing are all set per project and shown on the drawings you approve.
Materials and finishes
Most custom LED signs combine a fabricated metal body with an acrylic or polycarbonate diffuser. Typical choices:
- Aluminium or stainless steel returns, powder-coated or painted to your brand colours.
- Opal or colour-matched translucent acrylic faces, with vinyl overlays for exact colour.
- Brushed, polished or painted metal for the non-lit parts of the design.
- Backing plates or panels where the wall cannot take direct fixings.
Colour matching to brand references is possible, but acrylic, vinyl and LED output all change how a colour appears when lit, so we recommend viewing samples.
Lighting options
LED has largely replaced fluorescent and gas tube for sign lighting because modules are compact, run cool and are easy to service. We select module type, density and colour temperature to suit the face, depth and distance.
- White LED in a warm, neutral or cool temperature, matched to the brand and surrounding lights.
- Single-colour LED for strong red, blue or green faces.
- Colour-changing options such as RGB, RGBW, pixel and DMX control are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Power supplies and drivers are placed where they can be reached for service, and wiring is planned during the survey so the finished sign looks clean.
How it compares with the specific formats
Custom LED is the umbrella; the details decide the look. When you already lean toward one format, these pages go deeper:
- Pick front-lit channel letters for the strongest forward glow and legibility from a distance.
- Pick halo-lit letters for a premium, restrained look on a clean wall.
- Pick dual-lit letters when you want both a lit face and a halo.
- Pick an LED lightbox for an evenly lit panel with a changeable face.
- Pick LED neon flex for script, curves and an atmosphere-led interior.
A custom project can combine several of these; we will say honestly where one format suits better than another.
Technical considerations
- Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. We confirm on site, because traffic speed and obstructions change the answer.
- Contrast: light letters on a dark wall read better than the reverse in most conditions.
- Mounting surface: face brick, plaster, ACP cladding, glass and steel frames each need a different fixing approach.
- Electrical access: a supply point and isolator need to be reachable, and the existing distribution board capacity may need to be confirmed by an electrician.
- Glare and light spill: overly bright signs near residential windows can cause complaints, so output is set for the context.
- Weather and maintenance access: we plan sealing, drainage and access for future service.
- Approvals: structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked during the survey and design stage, and may need the landlord, body corporate or municipality. We cannot promise approval.
What affects the price
- Size, depth and overall complexity of the design.
- Number of lit elements and the lighting type.
- Materials: metal grade, finish and face material.
- Mounting method, wall condition and cabling distance.
- Access equipment needed for installation.
- Drawings, mockups and approval submissions.
- Installation location and the number of site visits.
We quote after the brief and, where possible, the site survey, so the number reflects the real job.
Care and maintenance
Wipe faces with a soft cloth and mild soapy water; avoid solvent cleaners on acrylic. Have the sign checked periodically for loose fixings, water ingress and failed modules. Our LED signage repairs and cleaning and maintenance services cover this, including signs we did not make.
Areas we serve
Custom LED signs suit businesses across Gauteng, from corporate offices in Sandton to industrial sites on the East Rand. Surveys and installations are arranged by appointment from our Rivonia base.

How ordering works
- 1
Brief
Share your logo, the building and what the sign must achieve. We discuss budget range and timing.
- 2
Site survey
We measure the facade, check the surface and power, and note sightlines. Our team measures the wall or structure, checks the fixing surface, locates power and photographs the viewing angles. Structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked at this stage.
- 3
Design and approval
You receive drawings and a mockup on a photo of your building. We advise on landlord or municipal paperwork.
- 4
Manufacture
Metalwork, lighting and faces are fabricated and tested before they leave our workshop.
- 5
Installation
Installation is booked by appointment across Gauteng, with electrical connection by a suitably qualified person.
Frequently asked questions
How is a custom LED sign different from a standard lightbox?
A lightbox is one format. A custom sign starts from your logo and building and may use channel letters, edge-lit panels, neon-style tube or a mix, rather than a fixed box shape.
Can you match my brand colours?
We match to your references as closely as the materials allow. Colours shift when lit, so we recommend viewing sample faces before approving production.
Do you handle the municipal approval?
We advise on what is likely to be needed and can prepare drawings. Approval depends on the property and the municipality, and may involve the landlord or body corporate.
Can an old fluorescent sign be converted?
Often yes. See our LED retrofit services; the condition of the cabinet decides whether conversion is worthwhile.
Will the sign be lit all night?
Timers, photocells and switching are set to your preference. Constant night-time lighting has running costs and may be limited by local rules or your landlord.
