Face and halo lighting
Dual-Lit Channel Letters: Glowing Face and Halo
Dual-lit channel letters, sometimes called combo-lit, light the face of each letter and also throw a halo onto the wall behind it. One set of letters therefore gives you direct visibility and a layer of depth.
They suit brands that want the readability of a lit face without giving up the architectural feel of a halo.
- Lit face plus halo
- Depth and readability
- Distinctive night look
- Fully custom build

Where dual-lit letters work best
- Landmark office buildings and business parks that want to be seen from a distance and still look refined.
- Hotels, entertainment and hospitality venues.
- Showrooms and flagship stores.
- Buildings with pale or mid-toned walls that receive the halo well.
- Brands that want a signature night-time look that differs from neighbours.
If budget is tight or the wall is dark, a simpler single-lit option is often the sensible choice.
Design options
- Face and halo control: face and halo can use the same or separate lighting circuits, so each can be dimmed or switched independently.
- Face colour: opal white or tinted acrylic.
- Halo colour: usually white; coloured halos are possible and colour-changing is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
- Return depth and standoff: set to balance face brightness and halo spread.
- Trim and return finish: painted, brushed or polished to suit the brand.
Materials and finishes
- Returns in aluminium or stainless steel with painted, brushed or polished finishes.
- Translucent acrylic faces, optionally with vinyl for detailed colour work.
- Clear or opal rear panels or open backs for the halo light path.
- Stainless steel standoffs and fixings.
Because both the face and the wall are part of the effect, we recommend sample panels and a night-time visual before you commit.
Lighting options
Two groups of LED modules are used: one illuminating the face from inside, one directed backward. Splitting them lets you run the face at night for visibility while keeping the halo as the main effect in the evening, or switch each on its own schedule.
White is standard. Colour variants are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Dual-lit vs front-lit vs halo-lit
- Choose dual-lit when you want both direct brightness and a halo, and are prepared for the extra build.
- Choose front-lit letters if face visibility is enough and you want a simpler, more economical build.
- Choose halo-lit letters for a quieter, more architectural look with a solid metal face.
- Ask about an entirely custom LED sign if the logo does not suit letter-by-letter construction.
Technical considerations
- Letter size and distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. We confirm on site.
- Depth: returns need enough depth to house both light sources and keep the halo directed.
- Wall finish: smooth, light walls give the halo more definition; dark or rough walls reduce it.
- Wiring and drivers: two circuits mean more cabling; we plan drivers and access during the survey.
- Weather: faces, joints and rear openings are detailed for drainage and sealing.
- Approvals: structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked during the survey and design stage and may need the landlord, body corporate or municipality.
What affects the price
- Two lighting systems rather than one.
- Letter size, depth and count.
- Return and face materials and finishes.
- Number of separate circuits and controls.
- Wall condition and fixing method.
- Access equipment and installation complexity.
- Drawings, night-view mockups and approvals.
Care and maintenance
Clean faces gently and check the halo evenly lights the wall. Because there are two light groups, a partial fault is easy to spot; LED signage repairs can restore either group.

How ordering works
- 1
Brief
Share the logo and tell us whether the face, the halo or both must carry the sign.
- 2
Site survey
We study the wall, power and sightlines. Our team measures the wall or structure, checks the fixing surface, locates power and photographs the viewing angles. Structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked at this stage.
- 3
Design and approval
Drawings and a night mockup show both lighting effects on your building.
- 4
Manufacture
Letters are fabricated with two lighting groups and tested.
- 5
Installation
Letters are fixed, wired and tested on an appointment day.
Frequently asked questions
Is dual-lit just front-lit plus halo-lit?
In effect yes, built into one letter. It is a more complex build than either on its own.
Can face and halo be switched separately?
Yes, if designed with separate circuits.
Is dual-lit more expensive?
Usually, as there are two lighting systems and a more complex build. Compare options in your quote.
Will it work on dark walls?
The halo is reduced, but the lit face remains effective. See front-lit letters.
Can it be installed on glass?
Not for the halo effect, which needs a wall behind. We advise at survey.
