Forecourt canopies

Petrol Station Canopy Branding and Lit Fascia Bands

The canopy is the biggest branded surface on most forecourts. Its fascia, colour bands and lettering tell drivers where to pull in and make the site read as one coherent business, day and night. Metal Signage designs, makes and fits canopy branding for petrol stations and service sites, whether you are rebranding a whole forecourt or refreshing a faded fascia.

  • Fascia, bands and lettering
  • Reads from the road
  • Lit for night trading
  • Rebrand or refresh

Where canopy branding is used

Any forecourt with a covered fuel island has a canopy edge that can carry branding. The same principles apply to covered service bays, truck stops and wash-bay roofs.

  • Full forecourt rebrands where the canopy colours change
  • Independent stations that want a cleaner, more consistent look
  • Sites with faded, cracked or damaged fascia panels
  • Forecourts adding a new service and needing extra lettering or icons
  • Operators who must follow a brand standard for band colours and proportions

Canopy branding options

Canopy fascias are long, shallow surfaces, so the design is as much about proportion and rhythm as it is about the logo.

  • Colour bands. Horizontal stripes in brand colours, built from painted aluminium, composite cladding or applied vinyl.
  • Lit bands. Continuous or segmented LED-lit strips along the fascia for a strong night-time outline.
  • Fascia lettering. Flat-cut or channel letters mounted on the fascia face; see front-lit channel letters for the lit version.
  • Logo panels. Lit cabinets set into the fascia at each end or on each face.
  • Soffit lighting. Lights under the canopy that light the pump islands, which we coordinate with the electrician on site.

Panels are normally modular, so a damaged section can be replaced without rebuilding the whole canopy.

Materials and finishes

  • Aluminium composite panels for flat, durable fascia cladding
  • Powder-coated aluminium or steel trim and edge profiles
  • Cast or flat acrylic for lit letters and logo panels
  • Translucent and opaque vinyl in brand colours
  • Stainless steel or galvanised fixings to resist corrosion

Forecourt air carries fuel vapour, grime and sun, so we choose materials and fixings with outdoor exposure in mind and recommend finishes that wipe clean easily.

Lighting the canopy

LED strips and modules behind translucent faces create a glowing band or lit lettering that is visible from the road. Where the canopy also lights the pumps, the sign lighting should not compete with it, since a very bright fascia beside dim pump lighting looks uneven and can cause glare for customers.

We aim for even output along the whole length of the band. Colour-changing or animated canopy lighting is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability, and may not suit a site that follows a fixed brand standard.

Canopy branding compared with other forecourt signs

  • A pylon is for drawing drivers in from the road; the canopy confirms the brand and services once they arrive.
  • Use directional and safety signs for entry, exit, pump numbers and instructions; the canopy fascia is not the place for small text.
  • Use convenience store branding to carry the identity into the shop.
  • For retail buildings with a flat fascia rather than a canopy, see retail fascia signs.

Technical considerations

  • Canopy structure. The fascia and its supports must carry the added weight and wind load of panels and lettering; we check this at survey.
  • Working at height. Canopy work involves access equipment and a safe working zone around fuel areas, which needs careful planning with the site operator.
  • Electrical. Lighting runs along the canopy and back to a distribution board; we confirm cable routes and any hazardous-area limitations with the site and its electrician.
  • Trading hours. Installation is usually scheduled around trading so pumps can stay in use as far as safety allows.
  • Approvals. Structural, electrical and municipal signage matters are checked during survey and design, and may need landlord or municipal consent.

As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. We confirm lettering size on site.

What affects the price

  • Canopy length and fascia height
  • Amount of lit versus unlit branding
  • Cladding material and number of colour bands
  • Letter style: flat-cut, channel or logo panels
  • Access equipment and installation scheduling
  • Removal of existing fascia and disposal of old material
  • Electrical work needed to power new lighting
  • Number of canopies or sites in the rollout

Care and maintenance

Wash fascia panels with water and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Check lit sections regularly, because a failed LED section in a long band is easy to spot at night. Our LED signage repairs and cleaning and maintenance services cover both.

Canopy branding across Gauteng

Site surveys and installations are arranged by appointment from our Rivonia base. These are some of the areas where forecourts commonly need canopy refreshes and rebrands.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rebrand just the canopy and leave the rest?

Yes. Canopy branding can be done on its own, though we recommend checking that the pylon, shop and signs still look consistent afterwards.

Will the pumps stay open during installation?

That depends on the site layout and safety requirements. We plan the work with the operator at survey and schedule it to limit disruption where it is safe to do so.

Can you match our brand colours?

We work from your brand reference or sign standard and show colour samples at the design stage. Translucent colours can look different when lit, and we point that out in advance.

Can damaged fascia panels be replaced individually?

Modular panels can often be replaced one at a time. We inspect the fixings and the structure first.

Do canopy changes need approval?

Structural, electrical and municipal signage matters are checked during survey and design, and may need the landlord, owner or municipality. We never promise approval in advance.
