Tall and unlit
Non-Illuminated Pylon Signs for Daytime Visibility
A non-illuminated pylon is a tall, freestanding sign with no internal lighting. The brand is carried by applied vinyl, painted graphics or fabricated metal. It suits businesses that trade in daylight, sites that already have good ambient lighting, and clients who want a tall sign with minimal running cost.
Metal Signage designs, fabricates and installs unlit pylons, and can tell you honestly when lighting would be worth adding.
- No electrical work
- Low running cost
- Tall and visible
- Lighting can be added later

Where unlit pylons work best
- Offices, clinics and schools that operate in daylight hours.
- Industrial and warehousing sites with flood or security lighting already installed.
- Business parks that need a tall directory sign.
- Sites where power at the boundary would be costly to run.
- Properties with restrictions on illuminated signs.
- Sites where a clean, architectural silhouette matters more than glow.
If night-time visibility is important, see illuminated pylon signs. For a shorter, wider format see non-illuminated monument signs.
Design options
- Single-column pylon: one tall support carrying stacked panels.
- Twin-column pylon: two supports for a wider face or additional tenants.
- Fabricated lettering on a panel: raised metal letters for shadow and depth.
- Applied graphics: vinyl or printed graphics on a metal or composite panel.
- Changeable tenant panels: slots that allow names to be updated as tenants change.
- Cut-out or shaped tops: a profile that reflects the logo.
Materials and finishes
- Galvanised or powder-coated steel for the structure.
- Aluminium composite panels as a flat, stable face.
- Painted or powder-coated aluminium sheet.
- Reflective vinyl where visibility in headlights is useful.
- Fabricated letters in aluminium or stainless steel.
Without internal lighting, finish and colour contrast do all the work. See materials and finishes.
Lighting: why and when it is unlit
Unlit does not mean invisible. A well-contrasted sign with reflective elements can read clearly in headlights and under street lighting. Unlit pylons are honest about what they are good at: daytime recognition at low cost.
- Reflective vinyl picks up vehicle headlights.
- External spotlights can be added without rebuilding the sign.
- Provision for later lighting: we can design the structure so internal lighting could be added if needed.
If the business depends on night traffic, an illuminated pylon is usually a better investment.
How it compares with related options
Choose a non-illuminated pylon when the business trades in daylight and you want height without electrical cost. Choose an illuminated pylon when night visibility is part of the value. Choose a totem for a slimmer format at an entrance. Choose a monument sign when low and solid suits the entrance better than tall and slim. Choose a freestanding business sign for a general ground-sign option.
Technical considerations
- Foundation and wind: tall, narrow signs catch wind, so footing design and steelwork are sized accordingly. Structural input may be needed.
- Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. We confirm on site.
- Contrast: an unlit sign relies on strong colour contrast, so the palette is chosen with that in mind.
- Position and sightlines: the pylon must not obstruct vehicle sightlines.
- Underground services: checked before digging.
- Weather: panels and fixings must suit full sun and rain.
- Approvals: height and position rules, landlord or body corporate consent and municipal outdoor-signage approval are checked at survey and design.
What affects the price
- Height and face area.
- Structure type and steel size.
- Face material and graphics method.
- Foundation and ground conditions.
- Number of tenant panels.
- Reflective materials.
- Installation equipment such as a crane or cherry-picker.
- Approval submissions and drawings.
Care and maintenance
With no lighting to service, unlit pylons are low-maintenance. Wash faces, check vinyl for lifting or fading, and inspect paint and fixings. Re-skinning a faded panel is often cheaper than replacing the sign. See signage cleaning and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add lighting later?
Often yes, if we plan for it. Say so in the brief and we can design the structure with provision for later lighting.
Will an unlit pylon be seen at night?
It depends on surrounding lighting. Reflective vinyl and external spotlights help, but if night trade matters an illuminated pylon is better.
How tall can a pylon be?
Height depends on the site, structural design and the rules that apply. We advise at survey.
Can tenant panels be changed?
Yes. Changeable tenant panels can be built in so names can be updated.
Do I need approval?
Usually. Municipal outdoor-signage rules and landlord or body corporate consent may apply, and we check what is relevant during survey and design.
