Colour-changing LEDs
RGB Colour-Changing Signs for Flexible Brand Lighting
RGB signs mix red, green and blue LEDs to produce a wide range of colours from the same sign. A single set of letters or a box can be white by day, brand colour in the evening and a seasonal colour for events.
They suit venues, hotels and buildings that want lighting to carry mood and campaigns. Colour-changing signs are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
- Many colours, one sign
- Scenes and simple fades
- Brand and event modes
- Subject to assessment

Where RGB signs work best
- Hotels, entertainment venues, bars and restaurants.
- Retail and showrooms that change campaigns often.
- Buildings that want to mark events or seasons.
- Facades and reception walls where lighting is part of the architecture.
- Brands with a bold colour identity that suits a lit accent.
For a business that only ever needs one brand colour, a single-colour LED sign is simpler and more economical.
Design options
- Lit element: channel letters, halo-lit letters, lightboxes, edge-lit panels or neon flex can all be built with RGB.
- Control type: simple remote, wall controller, app-based or integrated with a building system.
- Preset scenes: static colours, slow fades, scheduled changes or simple sequences.
- Zones: different parts of a sign can show different colours.
- Fallback white or brand colour: a default setting that returns the sign to its normal look.
Materials and finishes
- Metal returns, acrylic faces and diffusers matched to the lit effect.
- Opal or frosted faces to blend the RGB colours evenly.
- Aluminium housings for controllers and drivers.
- Standard wall fixings and standoffs.
Acrylic and diffuser choice affects how clean the colour mix looks, so we show samples before approval.
Lighting options
RGB modules combine red, green and blue LED chips. Mixing all three gives a white, but it is often a cool or slightly tinted white rather than a pure brand white. Where an accurate white matters, see RGBW architectural signage, which adds a dedicated white channel.
Lighting control, scenes and any pixel or DMX integration are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
RGB vs RGBW vs pixel vs single colour
- Choose RGB when changing colour is the goal and a perfect white is not critical.
- Choose RGBW when whites must be clean and brand-accurate.
- Choose programmable pixel signs for chases and animated effects.
- Choose front-lit letters in single-colour LED if you do not need to change colour.
Technical considerations
- Viewing distance: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. Colour changes may reduce perceived brightness.
- Colour accuracy: RGB white is not the same as a dedicated white LED, and some brand colours cannot be matched exactly.
- Controller placement: controllers and receivers need access and signal paths.
- Cabling: RGB uses more conductors; wiring is planned at survey.
- Glare and light spill: saturated colours can look intense at night and need dimming.
- Approvals: colour-changing lighting may face restrictions from landlords or municipalities, particularly where it could distract drivers. This is checked during survey and design.
What affects the price
- Lit element type and size.
- RGB module density and controller type.
- Number of zones and scenes.
- Complexity of cabling and installation.
- Dimming and scheduling features.
- Mockups and technical assessment.
- Access equipment.
Care and maintenance
Clean faces gently and keep controllers dry. If colours drift or a channel fails, our LED signage repairs service can diagnose modules and drivers.

Frequently asked questions
Can an RGB sign show my exact brand colour?
Often close, but not always exact. Brand-critical colours should be checked on samples, and RGBW may help with whites.
Is RGB suited to outdoor use?
It can be, with the right enclosure and approvals. This is subject to technical assessment.
Can I control it from my phone?
App control may be possible. It is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability.
Will changing colours draw complaints?
Bright, rapidly changing colours can be disruptive; we suggest calm transitions and check any local rules.
Is RGB more costly than a white sign?
Generally yes, because of extra modules, controllers and cabling.
