Installation and rigging
Signage Installation and Rigging at Height
Fitting a sign is a technical job. Metal Signage installs illuminated and non-illuminated signs on facades, fascias, pylons, canopies and roofs, using suitable access equipment and rigging for the height and weight involved.
It suits businesses, landlords and contractors who want signs fitted straight and safely, and connected correctly to power where needed.
- Work at height planned
- Access equipment arranged
- Correct fixings for each wall
- By appointment

Where installation and rigging is needed
- Large fascia signs and letters on shopfronts and offices.
- Signs on tall buildings. See high-rise building lettering and rooftop signs.
- Pylons, totems and monuments needing lifting equipment. See illuminated pylon signs.
- Canopy and forecourt signage in open areas.
- Heavy metal letters and large lightboxes that need several people and lifting aids.
Installation methods
- Direct fixing: letters or panels fixed straight to the wall.
- Stand-off mounting: letters held away from the wall, important for halo lighting.
- Backing rails and sub-frames: a base frame that carries the sign, useful on uneven walls and cladding.
- Hanging and suspended systems: for projecting and blade signs.
- Ground-set structures: footings and base plates for pylons and monuments.
- Template-based fitting: drilling templates to place letters accurately.
Fixings and materials
The correct fixing depends on the wall: masonry anchors for brick and concrete, suitable fasteners for steel and composite cladding, and sealing around penetrations. Stainless or suitably protected fixings are used where corrosion is a concern. Sealant keeps water out of drilled holes. Heavier metal signs need stronger fixing. See stainless steel letters and fabricated 3D metal letters.
Electrical connection
Illuminated signs need a power supply, cabling, transformers or drivers and sometimes controllers. Wiring and connection must be done and signed off by a suitably qualified person in line with the requirements that apply. We plan power routes at survey stage, and we note where the property electrician is needed. Advanced lighting such as RGBW, pixel or DMX is subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability. After fitting we test the lighting before handover.
How installation compares with related services
- Choose installation and rigging when the sign is made and needs to be fitted, or when you have a sign from another supplier.
- Start with a site survey so the method and equipment are planned.
- Choose removal and replacement when an old sign must come down first.
- Choose cleaning and maintenance for existing signs that only need a service.
Technical considerations
- Work at height: access is chosen to suit the job, which can include ladders, scaffolding or mobile lifting platforms, with safe working practice. Roof and parapet work needs extra planning.
- Wind and weight: large panels act like sails, so fixings and frames are planned with this in mind. Where required, an engineer's input may be needed.
- Traffic and pedestrians: cordoning and timing are planned where signs hang over public areas.
- Weather: installation may be delayed by rain or strong wind.
- Approvals: structural, electrical and municipal matters are checked in the survey and design stage and may need the landlord, body corporate or municipality.
What affects the price
- Sign size, weight and number of pieces.
- Height and type of access equipment.
- Wall type and fixings required.
- Electrical work and cable routes.
- Location, travel and working hours, such as after-hours work.
- Removal and making good of old signs.
After installation
We check alignment and lighting, make good the surrounding wall where agreed, and walk you through the sign. Keep notes of fixing positions and power details for future maintenance. Do not hang additional items on signs. Arrange regular inspections. See signage cleaning and maintenance.
