LED Digital Display Signs for Changing Content

LED digital displays show content you can change: promotions, messages, opening hours, event details or short video, instead of a fixed logo. They suit buildings, entrances, forecourts and sites where the message changes more often than a printed sign can keep up with. Digital displays are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability, and screen type, size and content tools are confirmed during the design stage.

  • Change content when you need
  • Message and image display
  • Housed in metal cabinets
  • Sized for your viewing distance

Where LED displays work best

A display earns its cost where the message genuinely changes:

  • Retail frontages and centres with promotions, specials and events
  • Schools, churches, clubs and community venues with notices and event dates
  • Hospitality and entertainment venues with daily offers and line-ups
  • Reception areas, lobbies and showrooms with welcome and wayfinding messages
  • Industrial and corporate sites that display safety messages or visitor notices
  • Entrances and parking areas that show status or directions

If your message rarely changes, a fixed LED lightbox or lit letters will be more economical, more reliable and easier to maintain.

Design options

Digital displays differ mainly in what they show and where they sit:

  • Text and message boards: simple single- or multi-colour displays for lines of text
  • Full-colour screens: images, graphics and video within a fabricated cabinet
  • Combination signs: a fixed logo or sign with a display panel set into it, such as a pylon or monument
  • Double-sided units: back-to-back displays for freestanding positions
  • Interior displays: for lobbies, restaurants and meeting areas

Screen resolution is described by pixel pitch, the distance between LED points. A tighter pitch gives sharper images and suits closer viewing but costs more; a wider pitch suits long viewing distances.

Materials and finishes

Displays are housed in fabricated aluminium or steel cabinets, painted or powder-coated, with louvres or a protective mask to reduce glare and sun washout. Where a screen is built into a pylon or monument, the surrounding structure may be metal, composite or masonry finishes, matched to the building. Service access is designed in from the start, because the modules and power supplies may need to be reached over time. See materials and finishes.

Brightness and content control

An LED screen is itself a light source. Outdoor displays need much more brightness than indoor ones to be seen in daylight, and a display that is fine at midday can be uncomfortably bright at night. Good systems adjust brightness automatically or on a schedule.

  • Content management: messages and images are updated from a computer, a phone or a web interface, depending on the system
  • Scheduling: different content at different times of day
  • Brightness control: lower output after dark to limit glare
  • Fall-back content: a default message if the connection drops

All digital displays are subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability. Content-management software, connectivity and data costs are discussed at design stage, and your staff need a clear, simple process for updating the sign.

Digital displays compared with neighbouring options

LED lightbox signs show a fixed printed graphic with even lighting. They are cheaper to run and fail less often, so choose a lightbox if the message is permanent. Custom LED illuminated signs suit a lit brand name without changing content.

Programmable pixel LED signs create abstract effects on letters and shapes but do not display readable messages or pictures. A digital display is the only one of these options that shows changing text, images or video. For forecourt price displays, see petrol price display signs; for fixed menu content, menu boards and digital menus.

Technical considerations

  • Viewing distance and size: as a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of character height per 10 m of viewing distance for text. Screens for images need a pixel pitch matched to how close people stand.
  • Contrast and daylight: direct sun on a screen reduces visibility, so orientation and shading are checked at survey.
  • Mounting surface: screens are heavy, so the wall, frame or foundation must be assessed structurally.
  • Electrical access: displays draw continuous power and need data connectivity. We note supply capacity, cable routes and connection options on site.
  • Light spill and glare: bright, changing images can distract drivers. Brightness limits and content rules for roadside screens are discussed and may be set by the municipality.
  • Weather exposure: cabinets need ventilation and sealing for heat, rain and dust.
  • Access and approvals: structural, electrical and municipal approval matters, including outdoor advertising rules for changing-message signs, are checked at survey and design stage and may need the landlord, body corporate or municipality. We do not promise compliance in advance.

What affects the price

  • Screen size and pixel pitch
  • Indoor or outdoor specification and brightness
  • Single-colour message board or full-colour display
  • Cabinet construction, finish and any structural frame or pylon
  • Control hardware and content-management software
  • Power supply upgrades and data connection
  • Single-sided or double-sided unit
  • Access equipment and installation height

Care and maintenance

Keep screen faces clean with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, and make sure ventilation openings are clear. Check periodically for dead pixels or dim modules, and update content routinely so the sign does not look neglected. Back up your content files. How ordering works

  1. 1

    Brief

Tell us what you need to display, how often it changes and who will update it.

  2. 2

    Site survey

We assess the position, sun exposure, viewing distance, power and data options.

  3. 3

    Design & approval

You approve drawings, screen size and a mockup, and the content process is explained.

  4. 4

    Manufacture

The cabinet, frame and screen are built and tested with your content.

  5. 5

    Installation

The display is fitted, connected and commissioned, and staff are shown how to update it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I update the sign myself?

Usually yes, through a computer or phone interface. We confirm the method during design so it suits the people who will use it.

Will I be able to see it in direct sunlight?

Outdoor displays are built much brighter than indoor ones, but position and angle still matter. We check sun exposure during the survey.

Do I need approval for a digital sign?

Possibly. Changing-message signs are often treated differently from fixed signs. We check at survey and design stage, but approval rests with the landlord, body corporate or municipality.

How big should the screen be?

It depends on viewing distance and content. As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of text height per 10 m of viewing distance, and we confirm on site.

Can a display be built into an existing pylon?

Sometimes, subject to technical assessment and confirmed availability. The structure must carry the extra weight and power.
