Safety signage

Industrial Safety Signs for Workplaces and Sites

Industrial safety signs communicate what workers and visitors must do, must not do, and where to go in an emergency. We make mandatory, warning, prohibition, fire-equipment and emergency signs, plus site rules boards and custom safety messages.

They suit factories, warehouses, workshops, construction yards and any employer that needs consistent, durable safety signage across a site.

Where industrial safety signs work best

Safety signs belong wherever a hazard, a rule or an escape route needs communicating. Typical placements include:

  • Site entrances, with PPE requirements and site rules boards
  • Machine guarding, press areas and workshops
  • Chemical stores, battery charging and gas storage
  • Forklift and pedestrian crossing points
  • Fire equipment, assembly points and emergency exits
  • First aid stations and eyewash positions
  • Electrical rooms, high-voltage areas and isolators
  • Working-at-height, confined space and hot work areas

Your own risk assessment and safety officer decide which signs you need. We manufacture to your list or help you turn it into a clear schedule of signs, sizes and positions.

Sign categories and formats

Safety signs are grouped by meaning, and each group has a recognised shape and colour convention that people learn to read at a glance.

  • Mandatory: blue circles telling people what they must do, such as wear a hard hat or safety boots.
  • Warning: yellow triangles flagging a hazard, such as slippery floors or overhead loads.
  • Prohibition: red circles with a diagonal bar, such as no smoking or no unauthorised entry.
  • Emergency and safe condition: green signs for exits, first aid and assembly points.
  • Fire equipment: red signs for extinguishers, hose reels and alarm points.

Formats include single symbols, symbol-and-text combinations, multi-message site rules boards and directional arrows. Many sites also add custom signs in the company language mix, which commonly includes English alongside other local languages.

Materials and finishes

The sign material should match the environment.

  • Aluminium: a solid choice for outdoor and heavy-use signs.
  • ACM (aluminium composite): flat, light and economical for indoor and sheltered signs.
  • Rigid plastic: practical for small internal signs.
  • Stainless steel: for corrosive or wash-down areas.
  • Photoluminescent film: for escape-route signs that need to remain visible in a power failure, subject to suitability for the application.
  • Reflective film: for outdoor and yard signs viewed in headlights.

See materials and finishes for how they compare.

Lighting and visibility

Most safety signs are unlit and rely on correct placement, contrast and good ambient lighting. Where the situation is harder, options include reflective faces, photoluminescent materials for emergency routes, and externally lit sign positions.

Illuminated exit signs and emergency lighting are electrical installations with their own requirements. We can discuss what is practical for your site, but electrical and compliance questions are for your safety officer and qualified electrician to confirm.

How safety signs compare with related options

Choose industrial safety signs for messages about hazards, rules and emergencies. For other needs:

Keep safety signs visually distinct from branding. They work because workers recognise the standard colours and shapes.

Technical considerations

Viewing distance and size. As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance, and symbols should be sized for the furthest person who needs to read them. We confirm on site.

Placement. Signs should be at eye line, near the hazard, unobstructed and not placed where they can be mistaken for something else. Too many signs in one spot reduce impact.

Mounting. Wall, post, machine and gate fixings differ. Vibration areas need secure fixings, and outdoor signs need weather-suited fasteners.

Standards and approvals. Safety signage is shaped by workplace safety regulations and recognised signage standards. Your safety officer or risk assessment determines what is required, and we do not promise compliance on your behalf. Landlord or park consent may apply to external signs.

What affects the price

  • Number of signs and the variety of different messages
  • Sign size and material
  • Single symbols versus multi-message boards
  • Photoluminescent or reflective faces
  • Custom wording or multiple languages
  • Mounting hardware and posts
  • Installation time and access at height
  • Whether artwork exists or must be set up

Care and maintenance

Safety signs only work while they are legible. Include them in regular site inspections: clean dust and grease with mild detergent, replace faded, scratched or damaged signs, and check that nothing blocks them. Photoluminescent and reflective signs should be kept clean to perform properly. For ongoing support, see maintenance.
