Asset labelling

Industrial Asset and Equipment Labels Built to Last

Industrial asset and equipment labels identify machines, pipes, panels, valves and stock so that maintenance teams, auditors and operators can tell what is what. We produce engraved, printed and metal labels in the size and numbering system your site uses.

They suit factories, plants, workshops, warehouses and facilities that need asset registers matched to physical tags.

  • Engraved or printed
  • Numbered to your register
  • Heat and chemical options
  • Bulk batches supplied

Where asset and equipment labels work best

Labels earn their keep where people need to identify equipment quickly and accurately.

  • Machine and plant identification plates showing asset number and name
  • Electrical distribution boards, isolators and cable labels
  • Pipe markers showing contents and flow direction
  • Valve tags and equipment tags in process areas
  • Racking, tool and storage location labels
  • Asset register tags for audits and insurance
  • Calibration, inspection and service-status labels

Labels differ from safety signs. For hazard and rule messages, see Industrial Safety Signs.

Label and tag options

We match the label type to how it is fixed and what it faces.

  • Engraved plates: text cut or engraved into metal or laminate, permanent and legible even if the surface is scuffed.
  • Laser-marked metal tags: fine text and serial numbers on stainless or anodised aluminium.
  • Printed vinyl labels: economical for large batches, with strong adhesives for smooth surfaces.
  • Pipe marker bands and arrows: sized to pipe diameter, with contents and direction.
  • Hang tags on chain or cable tie: for valves and moving or curved equipment.
  • Sequential numbering and barcodes or QR codes: to link to your system.

Barcode and QR labels need good print contrast, and we recommend testing a sample with your scanner before a full batch.

Materials and finishes

The right material depends on heat, chemicals, wash-down and handling.

  • Stainless steel: for corrosive, wet or hygienic environments.
  • Anodised aluminium: light, durable and good for laser marking.
  • Engraving laminate: two-layer plastic with contrasting core, a practical indoor option.
  • Polyester and vinyl films: for adhesive labels on clean, smooth surfaces.
  • Brass: for a traditional engraved look on valves and plant.

If an area involves high temperature or aggressive chemicals, tell us. We recommend materials for the conditions you describe and suggest a sample test first, because we cannot assume suitability. See materials and finishes.

Lighting and visibility

Asset labels are not lit. Visibility comes from contrast, size and position. Where labels sit in dark plant rooms, options include reflective or photoluminescent faces, or placing them where existing lighting reaches. We note low-light positions at the survey so the material suits the setting.

How asset labels compare with related options

Choose asset and equipment labels to identify individual items. For other needs:

Many sites use labels for equipment, identification signs for places and safety signs for hazards, with a shared numbering style.

Technical considerations

Size and legibility. As a rough guide, many designers allow around 25 mm of letter height per 10 m of viewing distance. Labels are often read from arm's length, so smaller text is workable, but asset numbers on tall plant may need larger lettering. We confirm on site.

Fixing method. Adhesive, rivets, screws, cable ties and chains each suit different surfaces. Adhesive needs a clean, dry, non-oily surface.

Surface and temperature. Powder-coated, rough or hot surfaces affect adhesive choice. We advise on this and suggest a sample for demanding positions.

Numbering and data. Supply a spreadsheet so numbers, text and codes are produced exactly as in your register, and checked before manufacture.

Approvals. Labels inside a plant rarely need municipal approval. Where a client, auditor or insurer prescribes a format, send it so we can follow it.

What affects the price

  • Quantity, since larger batches reduce the cost per label
  • Material and thickness
  • Label size and shape
  • Engraving, laser marking or print
  • Sequential numbers, barcodes or QR codes
  • Fixing hardware such as chains and rivets
  • Artwork and data preparation

Care and maintenance

Engraved and metal labels need little attention beyond an occasional wipe. Keep adhesive labels clean and check edges for lifting, especially in hot or wet areas. Replace labels when equipment is renamed or renumbered, and keep a master list so replacements match. Oil, grime or abrasive cleaning can reduce legibility, so use mild detergent. See maintenance.
